Work on the business and not in it.

The art to good management is delegation.

How many of us on a daily basis think, “If you want something done well do it yourself.”

In the early days of management, I wanted to do everything, a real hands on approach. It wasn’t until my management career started to grow, that I realised I should be taking a hands-off approach. This is when I started to work on the business and not in it.

In simple terms, you move from doing to leading.

When you start to understand that delegation is the best approach to running a successful business or department the game changes, more importantly a good manager who delegate’s in the right way, empowers people and everything starts to grow.

This is when you start to work on your business and not in it.

For me, there are some simple wake up moments.

Firstly it’s about humility and leadership, having humility to know that you don’t know everything and good leadership is to build a team that does know what it needs to know.

Don’t spend too much time working on your weaknesses and trying to be everything, your department or business will only grow to the limits of your individual talent. You are again working in the business and not on it.

You need to grow the talents of the entire team. It takes a group of people to move a department or business forward, once you accept this and understand the change you are well on your way to success.

Building that team is key to the overall success. A true leader understands they don’t have all the answers and they surround themselves with the right talent.

Delegation gives you more time to do what you do best. It can take awhile to build trust, but once you do, it is so empowering!

This will benefit you for your own personal development and those around you.

It allows you to focus on the hours as the minutes are being taken care of.

There are some things you don’t do!

Never delegate something you are not prepared to do yourself

Never delegate by abdication, ensure you are there to both support and help the person in a structured environment with good process.

So next time when you are about to get knee deep into something, think again and work on your business and not in it, delegate the task, as all good leaders know when to get out of the way.
