What is an empowered workforce?
How do empowered people feel?
If you want a simple line, an empowered workforce is one that has an input into the structure, process and overall objectives of the business.
Empowered people feel they have an involvement in the business.
Since leaving Geneva, I have been incredibly busy in terms of finishing my book called Empowering People and also a series of online management courses, which are scheduled to be released within the next ten days.
The major point in both ventures is: do we have the ability to look honestly at ourselves in the mirror and can we be open and constructive?. Do we have the strength and courage to change the way we do things on a daily basis to both develop ourselves and those around us?
I firmly believe that people don’t leave companies they leave bosses.
So take a look back over your career and start to think about the boss you may have had in the past and what were their good and bad elements.
If I do that, I often think of my career and the reasons why I left organisations, and a lot of it always point to the manager’s inability to manage people.
We all have basic human needs and trust, empowerment and friendship. These are key to our development.
How many times have you been given a task that you don't agree with, or completed a piece of work that has been overlooked or dismissed?
The results are devastating, and the enthusiasm and passion are slowly sucked out of you.
How many of your bosses have lived off your achievements and never filtered the praise or reward down the line.
I did in my early career have a look at a recent article I had published.
I bet we can all think of a specific instance where this is the case.
The first steps to change is wanting change itself, so start to develop yourself to be the boss you always wanted to work with.
Once again people don't leave companies they leave bosses.
Being the agent of positive change for those around you is a responsibility
“A leader is best when people barely know he exists when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: We did it ourselves,” – Lao Tzu
I have found over the many years I have been a manager and recently CEO the biggest results have come when we have implemented an empowered culture.
Having the confidence to empower people and your workforce takes time, and there is no leap of faith.
Once you have built a team of people whom you can trust, the empowered culture will unfold.
My mantra for my business and life is: empower and inspiring people to do the things that inspire them, this is the key to an empowered environment.
Give people the ability to do positive things let them follow their passion.
Empower people and you will see the completion of tasks and workflows increase dramatically with the quality being a massive by- product.
Somebody who has cultivated this approach with huge success is Richard Branson I will finish on one of my favourite quotes of his.
“Train people well enough so they can leave, treat them well enough, so they don't want to.”
People don’t leave companies they leave bosses.
