Humility and Leadership

To be a good leader you have to have the humility to know that you don’t know everything and have the ability to surround yourself with better people than you.

For me, I have built a style that over the years has changed. I am now more than comfortable to get out the way and let people who know what they are doing, get on and succeed.

As a leader, you need to show values, beliefs and vision, but as in my other blogs you need to work on and not in your business.

Admitting as a leader you don’t know everything and employing people who are better at certain aspects can be a leap too far for some people.

It all comes back to another of my mantras; it is all about a purpose and not power.

As the leader, you have overall responsibility, but let people get on with their jobs, accept again you don’t know everything.

Look after people tend to their needs, it is your job to make sure they have everything they need to complete the work to the best of their ability. You don’t have to hold people's hand but be there for them.

One of the motivations to write this blog today was a post on the BBC website. The article asked a number of top CEO’s, their best advice on an aspect of business and it was about humility.

Thier comments resonated with me and confirmed my philosophies and ideas.

"Always surround yourself with people who are better than you. Whatever it is that you are not - surround yourself with them." said Harriet Green

This quote is everything that I believe in, be humble and empower people.

"I really would advise you to get two or three people to go into business with," said Richard Reed, one of the founders of Innocent Drinks, "who have got the same values as you, but different skills."

Great piece of advice again this has humility running right through it.

So in essence

"Whatever it is that you are not, surround yourself with people who are."

Let people innovate and develop and don’t let your insecurities and preservation get in the way. Become a great leader who is leading.
